Book Title: Sell Used Books Online
Author: Gary Hendrickson
Publishing Date: 2005
Pages: 42
Website: Sell-Used-Books-Online.com
I was perusing my collection of online auction eBooks recently when I decided to spend some quality time re-reading Gary Hendrickson’s, Sell Used Books Online: Selling Common Everyday Books on Half.com Like Crazy. Even though I bought the books a couple of years ago (it’s been revised recently), it’s still very relevant and a great value at $19.95.
The book consists of the following chapters:
- Introduction
- The Best Part-Time Home Business in Existence
- What You Need to Get Started
- Finding Books to Sell
- The ABC’s of Getting Ready to Sell
- Listing Your Books For Sale
- After the Sale
- Getting Paid
- 30 Tips to Help You Make More Money and be More Successful
Getting Started on Half.com
A significant portion of the book’s beginning is the obligatory basics detailing the process of listing books for sale on Half.com. There’s not a whole lot of value added in this section because the process itself is very simple and Half.com does a more than adequate job of explaining it on their site. However, Gary does include some valuable insights on setting your book’s condition, pricing guidelines, and comments to include in the description.
Sourcing Your Used Book Inventory
A key theme of the book and, in my opinion, what makes it a great value, is the section on sourcing your used book product inventory. He discusses several options for procuring the books, sources to avoid, what books are the best to sell (you’d be surprised), what books to avoid, and what you should pay for your books. His “30 Tips” chapter expands on these topics and does an excellent job of providing concrete examples of Half.com strategies and tactics to emulate and avoid.
If you’re looking for an easy-to-understand and implement guide to successfully sell used books on Half.com, then I heartily recommend Gary Henderickson’s eBook. It outlines the soup-to-nuts techniques necessary for:
- Acquiring inventory
- Storing & tracking inventory
- Pricing guidelines
- Listing for sale on Half.com, and
- Post sale actions

Is Best Match Working for the Silent Majority?

Update: Download the FREE eBook Best Match Made Simple
While the eBay sellers who are having trouble with Best Match are complaining quite vocally, there are some folks that are finding success.
Scot Wingo (CEO of Channel Advisor) mentioned this on his blog
On March 3rd when eBay rolled BestMatch we saw an even larger and more across-the-board conversion bump. We’ve got some [Channel Advisor] sellers seeing a 10-20% increase in conversions. I haven’t seen anything this dramatically positive on eBay in a LOOOOOONGGGG time.
The owner of Living on the Fringe blog has this to say about their experiences:
I found Decoding eBay’s Best Match from Auction Insights very helpful. Follow the links in the article if you have time. Of particular interest to me was the Best Match Made Simple.
Last night I made a few changes to items and I did have almost $200 in sales by this morning. First, I checked my competitor’s titles. Then I revised my titles to EXCLUDE any terms they didn’t use. This is absolutely backwards from any previous recommendations so it was tough to do. Then, I put one item from each style of trims I carry on fixed price. Too many of any one style would just have bumped my store listings off for sure. Right now it is possible those store listings will show up. This all depends on how many other competing items there are listed on eBay at any given time. However, it makes no sense to be jockeying for space with myself.
Hope this helps. It took me a few re-reads to get it. Mostly, I just couldn’t believe how much I needed to change my thinking. Remember feedback and DSRs are important, but eBay claims the majority of sellers have high scores. It is best to spend more time on figuring out best match than worrying about feedback and DSRs.
Improvements to Template-O-Matic

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks fighting the flu and coding improvements to Template-O-Matic.com. I’ve totally redone the templates that the site creates, improved the input form, and did some updates on the back-end.
I think you’ll like the results. Check out the feedback from one of our users:
Hi Doug,
I just wanted to tell you that the new templates look great and I love the new title font!
Have you ever thought about adding more color choices for the templates, like green and pink?
Thanks again for all your help and for providing such an easy to use site for computer illiterates like me!
Tonya
I’ll work on adding more color combinations in the near future. Oh, and remember you can create eBay templates at Template-O-Matic for free with no registration required.
