According to eBay’s corporate blog, the auction site’s message boards were hacked sometime before the morning of September 25th.  Hackers posted contact information and credit card numbers for approximately 1,200 eBay users.  eBay was careful to point out that the information came from sources other than eBay or PayPal.  The bogus posts were removed and eBay stated they were attempting to contact the individuals who had their personal information disclosed so that they might take appropriate precautions.  eBay went on to state that they suspected the hacker or hackers used compromised usernames and passwords harvested from phishing scams.
