I recently purchased, downloaded and read an eBook that caught my eye called Simple Market Research.  The book’s publishers advertise it as “the fastest way for beginners to pick great product niches to sell like professionals do.”  My perspective is someone who started reading this knowing next to nothing about internet market research, so I was definitely in the target audience.  Sure, I knew that market research involves finding a product in which there is significant demand and low competition.  But I didn’t know much else.

In fact, I didn’t know that this hollow knowledge was just a fantasy and that these Utopian niches of high demand and non-existent competition don’t actually exist.   Fortunately Simple Market Research was able to help me learn to research and discover niches in which there is sufficient demand to support my entry into the market that are also under-served by professional sellers who can market their products well.

Sure there are plenty of automated tools that advertise the ability to conduct this market research for you. But unless you truly understand the fundamentals and principles of market research, the user of these tools won’t be able to compete with those who do understand and grasp the subject.  The author of Simple Market Research provides an excellent analogy:

Let’s pretend for a moment that market research software is a razor sharp sword. If I handed you a razor sharp sword and threw you into a room full of evil ninjas and yelled, “Now kung-fu fight!,” how well do you think you would do, even with a razor sharp sword? Let’s assume you had no training and no experience fighting, just a person with a sword surrounded by trained killers. Yeah… it’s not gonna be pretty.

Tools are not solutions to a problem; they are aids to help you solve a problem.  You have to know what you are doing before you can truly benefit from using any research tool.

The reader, after studying and mastering Simple Market Research, is able to use these automated tools to their full potential.  I sincerely recommend you purchase and read this book before you invest in an automated market research tool such as OneSource or HammerTap.

Simple Market Research starts out with a healthy dose of reality and doesn’t pretend to have a secret formula or the keys to get rich overnight or even in 6-months’ time.  What it does do is teach (and teach well) the fundamentals of market research — the same fundamentals that almost every other accomplished online retailer has successfully mastered.  Simple Market Research does this by breaking down the process into six basic components:

  • Niche Research
  • Demand Research
  • Keyword Research
  • Advertising Research
  • Competition Research, and
  • Pricing Research

Through humor, pertinent examples, easy to comprehend explanations, step-by-step instructions and attention-keeping graphics and illustrations, Simple Market Research effectively brought me from a baseline of zero knowledge on the subject, to a point where I probably have a better understanding of internet market research than 90-95% of other eBay sellers or online retailers.

One part of the book I found distracting was the fact that the author chooses to remain anonymous, referring to him or herself as “the Market Research Coach.”  It makes the reader wonder why they wish to remain undercover.  However this is a minor distraction that does not in any way diminish the tremendous value of the information or the excellent, easy-to-digest manner in which it is presented.

A fundamental truth in online auction and internet retail selling is…

Sellers make their money when they buy their product… not when they sell it.

I’ve always understood this maxim, I’ve just never really grasped how to implement it…  until now.

A value is when you get something that’s worth more to you than what you paid for it.  Simple Market Research is an excellent value. Click here to visit the Simple Market Research site.

I’ve just reviewed the free e-book that Simple Market research gives interested parties and I have to admit that I made many of the mistakes he described in it. I’ve been trying to make up my mind whether or not to purchase it and your review has helped. Thanks!

This market reasearch book is also recommended by ebiz expert, Chris Malta (that’s how I came to learn about it). I respect his opinions and he seems to value the content and teachings in it. I haven’t purchased it but am considering it.
