On September 30th, a Canadian Court ruled that eBay Canada must turn over contact information and gross sales data to Canadian tax officials of power sellers based in that country. In an article, the New York Times speculated that the Canada Revenue Agency intended to cross-reference the sales data with the income the sellers actually reported. The case is under appeal.
In the United States, legislation has been proposed in Congress that would require similar reporting to the IRS. Under the proposal, online “brokers” such as eBay would have to provide data on all customers that conduct more than $5,000 in sales per year and conduct or 100 separate transactions.
